With the release of the much anticipated Windows 10 comes a whole suite of new versions, and whilst there’s seven versions available only a few are aimed at the retail consumer. It’s time we looked at what Windows 10 versions are being offered.
Windows 10 Home.
Windows 10 Home is intended as the mainstream consumer operating system for desktop and laptop computers and includes many new features. Main features are.
- Cortana, a personal assistant application.
- Microsoft Edge, Windows new browser.
- Hello, Which bundles Face recognition, Iris, and Fingerprint login options. To use these login features you will need a computer with at least one of the following, a Fingerprint reader, Eye scanner, or illuminated sensor. Some laptops already include these, but expect more to come as new models are released.
- Continuum tablet mode, a new touchscreen mode.
- Universal Apps, allowing one application to run on different Windows devices.
Windows 10 Home comes in both 32 and 64 bit versions.
Windows 10 Professional.
Aimed at the power user and small to medium business, Windows 10 Professional builds on the features of Windows 10 Home version, and adds features aimed at small business. Will be suitable for desktop and laptop applications.
- Windows Update for Business, A new way of receiving smaller Windows updates that wont interrupt business by automatically addressing system compatibility issues.
- Increased Security, Windows 10 Professional keeps your personal data completely separate from Corporate information.
- Also Group policy.
- File encryption.
- Windows 10 Professional will also connect to corporate domains.
- Better support for Remote and Mobile Devices.
- Enhanced Cloud Technology.
Windows 10 Professional comes in both 32 1nd 64 bit versions.
Windows 10 Enterprise.
This is the version of Windows 10 will be used by large organizations who purchase volume licenses, definitely not retail customers.
- Windows 1o Enterprise will only be available through Windows Software assurance.
- Enterprise builds on Windows 10 Professional with further enhanced security measures to further protect Sensitive business information, Devices, Applications, and Corporate Identities.
Windows 10 Mobile.
Windows 10 Mobile was known as Windows Phone Edition previously and will feature some new functions such as.
- Touch Screen enabled Office applications.
- Continuum for phone and Tablets. This is similar to the Windows 10 Home package but has been developed for touch screen Phones and Tablets with a screen size of less than 8 inches (200mm).
Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise.
Like Windows 10 Enterprise, Mobile Enterprise will be used by Volume Licensed Business customers who use Smartphones and Tablets, again with a screen under 8 inches (200mm). Features of Mobile Enterprise will include.
- Enhanced security over Windows 10 Mobile.
- Point of Sale funds transfer.
- Hand Held Terminals.
- ATMs and similar equipment.
- Industrial Automation Equipment.
Windows 10 Education.
Windows 10 Education is similar to Windows 10 Enterprise but will be available to Academic Volume License holders. Users will include Schools, Teachers, Students, and Educational Administrators.
Windows 10 IoT Core.
Windows 10 IoT Core is cut down but powerful version of Windows 10 designed for small footprint low cost devices. The IoT stands for “Internet of Things”. Expect to see examples of Windows 10 IoT running off an SD card on Raspberry Pi’s and the like.
