4 Useful Tips and Tricks for the Windows 10 Photos App

For a long time Windows relied heavily on Microsoft Paint as its only actual built-in editor – lacking as it was. It was only in Windows 8 that the Photos app was included, but it wasn’t very impressive.

Since then Microsoft has been making steady improvements to the Photos app however, and the Windows 10 version is worlds apart from its predecessors – and just keeps on getting better. If you’d like to try it out, there are a few useful tips and tricks that you should know:

  • Be sure to add all your photos

One of the best aspects of Windows’ Photos app is its ability to organize photos – but to take advantage of that you first need to make sure all your photos are added to the app. There are several ways that you can do this, including adding folders to Photos, importing photos from external drives, or simply syncing everything using OneDrive.

It is worth noting that seeing as Photos is heavily integrated with OneDrive, it makes sense to take advantage of it and will make importing any photos from your smartphone and tablets a lot easier if you have the OneDrive app installed.

  • Try out the search tool

If you’ve added all your photos to the Windows’ Photos app – you should definitely take advantage of the search tool. It is a great way for you to find any photo that you want, and turns Photos into a fairly advanced photo management tool.

Effective the Windows 10 Fall Update, the Photos app will allow you to search for places, people, things, and practically anything else you want to. In fact when you click on the search bar it will offer suggestions, including photos of people you may want to search for.

  • Make use of the Story Remix feature

Another feature added during the Fall Update was the Story Remix tool. With it you can essentially select just two (or more) photos and videos, and Photos will automatically bring together anything else it can find and come up with a video that includes its very own soundtrack, transitions, and themes.

If you aren’t satisfied you can get it to ‘remix’ it again, and end up with a completely different video with a completely different soundtrack, transitions, and themes. Suffice to say you can easily use it to come up with great clips to share and there are other capabilities in the Story Remix feature as well.

  • Understand how ‘Linked Duplicates’ works

By default the Photos app has a setting called ‘Linked Duplicates’ turned on, which essentially means that any identical photos will be rolled into a single photo when it is displayed in the Photos app. For management purposes that can be great as it will let you browse through your collection without being inundated with duplicates.

However in other cases you may want to find one of the specific duplicates – in which case you should turn the feature off. It can be found under ‘Settings’ and a simple click on the slider will let you disable it.

Hopefully these tips and tricks will help you make the most out of the Windows 10 Photos app. Make no mistake there’s a lot it can do in terms of helping you to edit and improve your photos as well.

While it won’t replace a more powerful photo editor such as Movavi Photo Editor (https://www.movavi.com/photo-editor/) – it will provide you with an effective tool to manage your photos, and tweak them in small ways as needed. For anything else you can always fire up your preferred editor and start performing the alterations that you need.
