But what many people don’t know is that you can make your own map with Google Maps. In this map you can set your own custom landmarks and such.

You can use your own map for example to create a map showing all the places you visited in the world, or all the places you’ve seen when riding around a country. Actually there is no limit to what you can do with your own map, and the best option is that it’s free to use and private.

So how do you create a custom map in Google Maps? Let’s get started!

How to create a map for free in Google Maps

1. First of all go to the official Google Maps website;

2. Click on the 3 horizontal dots on the left side.

3. Click on the Your Places link in the menu that shows

4. If you’re not signed into Google then sign in with your personal account. Otherwise continue to the next step.

5. If you had to logon then click on the 3 horizontal dots again and click on Your Places again. Once you’ve done that click on Maps and on the bottom click on Create Map.

You can now go ahead and give the map the name of your choosing and adding a description if you like. You can do this by clicking on “Untitled Map”.

By adding layers you can divide certain landmarks, spots and such into groups for example a hotel group, a city group and so on. Within these groups you can add markings, routes, and lines. You can see an example map below of how it looks like if you plan a route, add some interesting places and a hotel.

You can also choose to change the terrain design by clicking on Base Map. You can choose in this menu for terrain, route, satellite and so on. In the example above we used the road map. But in some cases a satalite map might be handy or a hybride map might be handy. The power is all yours.

You can also share your maps with your friends or family by clicking on Share in the left pane menu. You’ll get a link which you can sent around.

If you own a website or a newsletter for example than you can also embed the maps into your web-pages / newsletter. For more advanced options such as till click on the 3 vertical dots right of your maps name and choose embed. Be aware that you must set your map to public to be able to do this.
