Review: Resetting lost Windows password easily with PCUnlocker

While it won’t happen to most of us it’s a possibility; forgetting your windows password. If you’re really good with computers then you won’t have a problem and in about 10-15 minutes you have access to your computer once again, however most people won’t know how to do this. In this review, we are going to take a look at In this review we are going to take a look at PCUnlocker developed by Top Password Software Here is what they have to say about the tool themselves:

Forgot Windows password? Instantly bypass, unlock or reset lost administrator and other account passwords on any Windows system, if you forgot Windows password and can’t log into the computer.

100% success rate

Run on bootable CD/DVD or USB flash drive

Compatible with all Windows system

Quick, easy and reliable

We had a look at the enterprise edition.

Features

The three versions of PCUnlocker all support these features unless otherwise stated (at the moment of review, always check the publisher their site yourself)

You can either choose for enabling the local Windows administrator account and password (user Administrator) and use that account to gain access to your computer again, however, if your user folder is encrypted then this won’t help much since you won’t be able to use your files again. Therefore the program also supports bypassing the password of your local or Microsoft account without changing the current password. Using this feature you have access to your account again and you can save your files.

If you do however want to reset your passwords then this tool is able to change your Windows Local account but also your Microsoft account their password. However, in our tests, the Microsoft account password did come back after synced. You need to update your password on the web to make a permanent change. But it always you access back to your computer. Which is great.

While it’s not a feature that will be used much you also have the possibility to promote any standard or limited account to an Administrator account.

The standard version of this application costs 19.95 and allows you to use the features and more on Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows NT. The professional version and enterprise version also allows you to use these features and more on Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2000.

Another great feature which is only available to enterprise version is the possibility to reset Windows domain administrator passwords and unlocking, enabling and reenabling expired activate accounts. It also supports booting from an UEFI based computer or boot your locked PC using NXE. The professional version and enterprise editions also supports booting from an USB drive

The best thing is that it also supports computers with secure boot like the Microsoft Surface Pro, ThinkPad, Dell Venue and Toshiba Encore’s and any virtual machine runs.

The features of this program are quite impressed and more can be read on the official website: http://www.top-password.com/reset-windows-password.html.

I would score the features a solid 9 out of 10.

Design and Ease of Use

The program is designed in such a way that it’s easy to use for everyone no matter what level of technical skill you have. The hardest part is burning the disk to a cd, and that’s quite easy. The rest is really plug and play, to be honest.

All the features as described under Features are really just clicking and you’re done. Nothing really requires any technical knowledge from you.

The ease of this program therefor is very good and I believe it’s essential for such a program to be easy to use since it’s annoying enough that you can’t access your computer anymore.

Therefore I would score the design and ease of use a solid 8.5 out of 10. It would be good if they included a step by step burning program. While most people know how to do this, I’m sure some don’t. A program that guides you from putting in an empty disc to explaining how to boot to it, would be very useful. The program could then also check if you don’t have secure boot or UEFI.

Verdict

We were very impressed with this tool and I would recommend it personally if you ever lose access to your computer for whatever reason you could think off. It’s fairly priced, easy to use and works extremely well (and we put it through some hard tests).

We would score this program a solid 9 out of 10. With a 9 on features and an 8.5 on ease of use with a little room to improve according to us.
