SFC which is short for System File Checker is a tool built-into Windows that allows you to scan your system files for potential damage and attempt to repair the damage. In this short tutorial we will explain how to run SFC in Windows 10.

1. Open an Elevated Command Prompt (Administrator) window.

2. Once command prompt is open, type the following command to run SFC in Windows 10:

sfc /scannow

If you’re trying to run System File checker from outside Windows perhaps from the Windows Recovery Envirorment then you need to use some more parameters to get SFC running. The complete command is sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows/ The /offbootdir= parameter specifies the drive letter, while the /offwindir= parameter specifies the Windows path, c:\ is the drive letter.
